Community Updates: January 2022
Our global community of youth here at Youth STEM 2030 are tackling the world’s biggest challenges through science, technology, engineering and maths, creating a real impact across all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Here’s how some of them have been changing the world lately…
Rutendo Wins Mentoring Award
In 2021, Youth STEM Matters Volunteer (& 2020 Summit Design Team Member) Rutendo Kahari had the opportunity to mentor 4 Zimbabwean students who were a part of the AfriCAN Code Challenge. As a result of all her hard work, all her mentees were ranked in the top five, and one of them ended up representing Zimbabwe at the Pan African Finals! For her efforts, Rutendo was named “AfriCAN Code Challenge Mentor of the Year”!
Congratulations Rutendo on this amazing achievement!
Support Hakim's University Crowdfunder
At the age of three, 2020 Youth STEM Summit Speaker Kakooza Hakim sadly lost his father due to a heart attack. Not wanting anyone else to go through the same experience, Hakim founded a community-based initiative “Aid You” that aims to ensure that basic first aid skills and heart health information is widely available, which has helped over 1,500 students in Uganda.
Hakim recently enrolled at the African Leadership University for a Bachelors in Global Challenges in order to achieve his goal of using technology and community to help low-income communities access better and cheaper healthcare. However, due to his family’s financial situation, he doesn’t have the financial means to attend.
Hakim has therefore launched a crowdfunder to pursue his education - please share with your networks, and donate if you can!
Dimple & Jacqueline Named in Top 300 of the Regeneron Science Talent Search
Earlier this year, Society for Science announced the 2022 Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS) Scholars, comprising the top 300 young scientists in the US. Included on that list are Youth STEM Matters Volunteer, Dimple Amitha Garuadapuri, and Jacqueline Prawira whose project was published in Youth STEM Matters last month.
Huge congratulations to both Dimple and Jacqueline for making the list as it is no doubt a massive milestone and achievement in their scientific journeys!
Laura Featured in BBC Women in STEM Podcast
Youth STEM Matters Volunteer Laura Maisvoreva, alongside Youth STEM 2030 Founder Mhairi McCann, was recently part of a BBC Sounds podcast discussing “Generation Change: Equality in Science and Technology”. They featured alongside some amazing women and girls in STEM, including retired NASA astronaut Dr Cady Coleman and Nobel Prize winner Prof Andrea Ghez!
Maria Wins Watson Institute Scholarship
Recently, Youth STEM Matters Volunteer (and 2020 & 2021 Youth STEM Summit Speaker!) Maria Theresa Villatoro won a scholarship to Watson Institute. This amazing opportunity will allow Maria to focus on her own non-profit organisation, STEM In A Box, which provides STEM kits to underprivileged youths.
Congratulations Maria - we can’t wait to see what you and STEM In A Box achieve next!
