First Print Edition of Youth STEM Matters Available Now

The first ever Youth STEM Matters print edition has officially gone into print and is available to order now!

Last year, we announced our plans to create the first print edition of Youth STEM Matters, which is sponsored by The Institution of Engineering & Technology, and after more than a year of hard work behind the scenes, we’re ecstatic to say it’s now available for purchase!

The print edition is 68 pages of young changemakers speaking up about issues that relate to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the STEM-based solutions that will tackle the world’s biggest challenges; it’s a compilation of everything that Youth STEM Matters represents.

It’s jam-packed with the research, ideas and innovations from 37 young people based in 18 countries globally, celebrating the power of youth to use STEM to change the world. This edition includes:

  • Isabela Naty Sanchez Taipe’s experience as a young Latinx programmer

  • Jacqueline Prawira’s innovative research to create alternatives to plastic

  • Lily Tierney’s exploration of how biomimicry could provide solutions to combat climate change and cool down our cities

  • Young people’s perspectives on the big issues, like climate change and vaccine equity

  • Interviews with Executive Director of STEMi Makers Africa, Amanda Obidike, and biomedical engineer Dr Amit Pujari

  • And much more!

The print edition is available to order now, at a price of £12 + P&P, with shipping available globally. So, if you’re a young person who wants to explore the latest developments in STEM, discover solutions to the issues you care about, and take action for a better world, the print edition is perfect for you!

And for all the teachers, youth workers & educators out there, the Youth STEM Matters print edition provides your students with credible resources - written for youth, by youth - that bring the curriculum to life in your classroom, and we’ve got classroom sets of the print edition available for you to order.

We’re also working with local businesses to bring the Youth STEM Matters print edition to schools and young people who would find the cost a barrier - if you’re a business who wants to empower the next generation in STEM and enable a diverse and socially-aware future workforce for your business, fill out our form and let’s work together!

Our print edition has been created to bridge the digital divide, and - in line with our sustainability commitments as part of the SDG Publisher’s Compact - we have proactively worked to ensure that its environmental impact is minimised. Our printers, Park Communications Ltd, is an ISO14001 certified printer, and Park is renowned as “one of the UK’s most eco-friendly printers”.  We’ve worked with them to ensure that Youth STEM Matters is printed sustainably, and are proud to be able to say that Youth STEM Matters is printed on paper manufactured using 100% recycled fibre with FSC Recycled and EU Ecolabel certifications, using 100% offshore wind electricity sourced from UK wind, and 100% vegetable oil based inks.  With sustainability at the core of everything we do, you can be confident that we’re giving youth a platform, sustainably.

We’d like to thank everyone who helped make the first Youth STEM Matters print edition a reality…from our authors who worked incredibly hard to write and perfect insightful articles spotlighting global challenges and solutions; to our sponsors The Institution of Engineering and Technology for enabling us to give youth a platform; our amazing printers, Park Communications, for their guidance and support to ensure a sustainable and successful printing process; the Youth STEM Matters Volunteer Team for all their hard work to bring the print edition to life; and of course, YOUth!  The platform we’ve created for young people through Youth STEM Matters wouldn't be possible without any of them!

Speaking of all the amazing people who helped make the print edition a reality, here’s what some of our authors had to say about their research, ideas and innovations being published in print in Youth STEM Matters:

I’m very grateful to Youth STEM Matters for the opportunity for my article to be published in the first print edition – having my work in a printed scientific journal at my age is something that I had never expected to happen!
— Josh Heng (17, England), Youth STEM Matters Author
Youth STEM Matters is a great platform to voice your thoughts and gain science communication skills/experience. I hesitated on whether I should submit an abstract or not because I didn’t think my topic would get published, but my advice for those considering submitting to Youth STEM Matters is to write about what you’re passionate about and just go for it. When you write about something you care about, you will want to put your best effort into it. I’ve not only gained writing/communication skills, but also friends along the way so don’t be afraid to try something new!”
— Katherine Chen (19, Canada), Youth STEM Matters Author
Your ideas, opinions and thoughts – no matter how small they may seem – have the potential inspire another person and Youth STEM Matters, an organisation promoting youth involvement and advocating for youth in STEM, is the perfect platform to do it.
— Ruvarashe Nyabando (17, Zimbabwe), Youth STEM Matters Author

And finally, a message from the Editor-In-Chief Adam Khan-Qureshi:

The print edition is a reflection of all the hard work and efforts from our team and authors over the past couple of years. Being able to distribute it globally will help the journal reach even more young people and inspire others to take action - whether that is a curious young person gaining the confidence to start a research project or a scientific institute wanting to partner with us to help give young people a platform to share their ideas. It is an incredibly exciting time for the journal, well done to everyone involved!
