The Abstract: May 2021

Welcome to The Abstract - your monthly round up of all the latest news from Youth STEM Matters, our youth-led scientific journal.

This month, we announced our first ever Youth STEM Matters Research Conference, have been working with authors from around the world towards our first print edition, and celebrated our Volunteer of the Month!

Behind the Scenes of the Youth STEM Matters Research Conference

Last week we announced the first ever Youth STEM Matters Research Conference - a virtual event that will showcase and celebrate the difference that young people are making through STEM research, and equip more young people with the skills and opportunities they need to tackle global challenges!

The Abstract spoke to some of the team of Research Conference Organisers about organising the conference, and what they’re most looking forward to about it…

Creating the First Youth STEM Matters Print Edition - Author Insights

Over the past month, we’ve been working with 35 young people from around the world who answered our call for submissions for the first Youth STEM Matters Print Edition.

They’ve submitted STEM based projects and are writing articles on a whole range of global issues, from using biomimicry to create more sustainable cities, to a project that created a reusable mask specifically for kids, to how lab grown meat might help us tackle the climate emergency.

Here’s what author Samiksha Manoharan said about her experiences so far of working with our team to make her article the best it can be…

My article is mainly focused on two major contributors to climate change - rising meat consumption and food wastage. I really had a great time doing some research about STEM-based solutions to tackle these issues like developing cultivated meat and implementing AI-based technology to reduce food wastage in restaurants. Overall, I really had fun working on my article and I am pleased to be able to contribute my work to the first Youth Stem Matters Print Edition.

May 2021 Volunteers of the Month Recognised!

With June 1-7th being Volunteers’ Week, we’re doing something a bit different for this month’s Volunteer of the Month…Over the past 4 weeks of May, so many members of our Volunteer Team have made contributions worthy of recognition. From organising our Research Conference, to reviewing articles for our upcoming print edition, to completing (or delivering!) training, and pulling together a funding application, it’s been a month where many team members stepped up! With that in mind, we simply couldn’t pick one person to recognise, and with it being Volunteers’ Week, we want to say a big THANK YOU to every member of the Youth STEM Matters Volunteer Team, by recognising everyone as our May 2021 Volunteer of the Month! Youth STEM Matters simply wouldn’t be able to create a platform for youth globally without their time, energy and continued dedication, so congratulations to the whole Youth STEM Matters Volunteer Team for your incredible work.
