Coordinating Science Communication Editor

 

Role Overview

The Coordinating Science Communication Editor takes overall responsibility for the peer-review process for Science Communication articles at Youth STEM Matters. You’ll ensure the overall quality of published articles, and work to ensure both quality and efficiency of our operations within the science communication peer-review process. You’ll also play a key role in supporting the development of Science Communication Editors, and forward-planning team capacity.

Approximate Time Commitment: 4-5 hours per week

In addition to what’s outlined in our What’s Involved section, in this role, you’ll…

  • Lead the logistics of science communication peer-review process, including matching Science Communication Reviewers to articles and forward planning team capacity to ensure we make best use of the team and offer our authors the best experience

  • Take responsibility for overall quality of articles published in Youth STEM Matters, ensuring we publish unique, scientifically valid and ethically sound articles

  • Provide regular reports to Executive Team on team progress & stats

  • Complete an initial review of submissions received, to ensure they meet our minimum requirements for peer-review

  • Communicate with science communication authors by email, to update them on their article’s progress

  • Provide support to Science Communication Editors to progress their assigned articles

  • Provide feedback to Science Communication Editors

  • Ensure articles are all progressing as expected via weekly checks on our article management system

  • Lead regular meetings of Science Communication Editors

Previous Experience

For this role, we’re looking for someone who has previous experience in:

  • An interest in STEM and/or the SDGs (note that this does not need to be your primary interest or your field of study).

  • Previous experience in communicating science to others is essential.  This could include (but is not limited to): blog/magazine pieces, scientific posters, videos, podcasts and presentations.  This could include experience you have gained by publishing articles in Youth STEM Matters.

  • Leadership experience (in any context) is essential
