Lead Artist

Role Overview

The Lead Artist coordinates the creation of original artwork to accompany the articles that we publish, and has a key role in making the communication of STEM and the UN Sustainable Development Goals accessible to youth globally. The Lead Artist will coordinate projects for the Team Members who specialise as Artists, and work collaboratively with other members of the Youth STEM Matters Team to do this.

Approximate Time Commitment: 4-5 hours per week

In addition to what’s outlined in our What’s Involved section, in this role, you’ll…

  • Lead the logistics of Artist specialists, including forward planning team capacity to ensure we make best use of the team and offer our authors the best experience

  • Work collaboratively with relevant Research/Science Communication Editors to create assignment briefs for Artists

  • Assign Artists to projects, based on their artistic strengths & mediums

  • Provide guidance to Artists during projects

  • Ensure quality of art is of a high level - something we’re proud to publish alongside an author’s article/project - and is scientifically accurate

  • Provide feedback to Artists on assigned projects

  • Provide regular reports to Executive Team on Artist progress & stats

  • Create both initial and continued skills development for Artists specialism

  • Ensure all projects are on track to be completed within agreed timescales via weekly checks

Don’t worry if these sounds unfamiliar right now, we’ll give you all the skills development training you need to succeed in the role!

Key Skills & Qualities

If you’ve got a passion for both STEM and art, and want to use your creativity to make a difference, this could be the perfect role for you! We’re looking for a range of skills and qualities in our ideal Lead Artist…

  • ✅ A passion for using art to communicate the big challenges in our world and their STEM-based solutions

  • Art, in any medium

  • Organised approach, including forward planning team projects

  • ✅ Able to work on own initiative to make decisions and implement ideas

  • ✅ Clear communication

  • ✅ Awareness (or willing to develop an awareness) of a range of different art mediums

  • ✅ Committed to the development of Artist specialists, including being able to give others constructive feedback

Previous Experience

For this role, we’re looking for someone who has previous experience in:

  • Creating Artwork - we don’t mind whether this has been for enjoyment, for a qualification, for another organisation or as part of a competition! The art you have done previously doesn’t necessarily have to be STEM based.

  • One or more STEM subjects, to help ensure the scientific accuracy of artwork that is produced. Note that this does not necessarily need to be your current or primary area of study.

If you don’t have experience in these areas yet, joining as a Team Member (which can include specialising as an Artist) could be a great option for you!
