Science Communication Editor

 

Role Overview

Science Communication Editors (2x, with complementary scientific interests) coordinate the peer-review process of science communication articles, including making editorial decisions on science communication articles that are submitted to Youth STEM Matters, based on the comments given by Science Communication Reviewers. You’ll also play a key role in supporting the development of Science Communication Reviewers, and act as a first point of contact for authors of your assigned articles, enabling them to make their article the best it can be.

Approximate Time Commitment: 4-5 hours per week

In addition to what’s outlined in our What’s Involved section, in this role, you’ll…

  • Compile feedback given by Science Communication Reviewers on STEM-based projects, to make editorial decisions (decide whether an article should be published, rejected, or returned to the author to make revisions)

  • Provide support to Science Communication Reviewers to complete their assigned reviews

  • Communicate with our authors of science communication articles, keeping them updated on the progress of their submission, and supporting them to implement feedback effectively to make their project the best it can be

  • Provide feedback to Science Communication Reviewers

  • ✅ Clear written communication

  • Awareness of the importance of the accessibility of science, and how inclusive science communication can be used to achieve this

  • ✅ Willing to develop an understanding of our audience

  • ✅ Ability to generate ideas or look at things from a different perspective

  • Enthusiasm for helping others and guiding our authors through the peer-review process

  • ✅ Committed to the development of Science Communication Reviewer specialists, including being able to give others constructive feedback

 

Previous Experience

For this role, we’re looking for someone who has previous experience in:

  • An interest in STEM and/or the SDGs (note that this does not need to be your primary interest or your field of study).

  • Previous experience in communicating science to others is essential.  This could include (but is not limited to): blog/magazine pieces, scientific posters, videos, podcasts and presentations.  This could include experience you have gained by publishing articles in Youth STEM Matters.

  • Leadership experience (in any context) is desirable, but not essential.
