The Abstract: November 2020
Welcome to The Abstract - your monthly round up of all the latest news from Youth STEM Matters, our youth-led scientific journal.
November has been a busy month for us, with many of our team being involved in the Youth STEM Summit, a new Referencing Guide to help when you Submit an Article, and an update to the Youth STEM Matters articles on our website!
Youth STEM Matters @ Youth STEM Summit
The Youth STEM Matters Volunteer Team played a key role in the success of the first ever Youth STEM Summit, which took place from 30th October - 1st November. They did an amazing job of supporting this virtual event (which was organised by our fantastic Youth STEM Summit Design Team), so we wanted to say a big THANK YOU to…
Our excellent session hosts…
Anne-Rosa Bilal, who hosted ‘Lightning Talks: The Big Challenges’
Louise Robertson, who hosted ‘Spotlight on Food Insecurity’
Aditi Kona, who hosted our series of ‘Crash Course Workshops’
The Volunteer Team members who took to the stage as speakers…
Laura Maisvoreva, who shared her journey in STEM during the ‘Youth in STEM’ session
Meg Ardis, who shared her experiences and advice as part of the ‘STEM in Education’ panel discussion
Poppy Bradley and Kerena Norris, who delivered a fantastic workshop on ‘Research 101’ as part of our ‘Crash Course’ series
Adam Khan-Qureshi and Alvina Mishra who showcased the opportunity of submitting an article to Youth STEM Matters, and gave an introduction to the peer review process in ‘Scientific Publishing for Maximum Impact’, also as part of the ‘Crash Course’ series of workshops.
And everyone from the Volunteer Team who helped spread the word, and joined us over the 3 days!
Update to our Online Articles
We’ve updated our online articles, so that it’s easier than ever for you to find what you’re looking for! You can now filter articles by style, choosing to view all the Original Research, Science Communication or Review Articles, or, you can pick which UN Sustainable Development Goal you want to filter by, to read about the issues you care about.
Noticed that SDG 1: No Poverty and SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation don’t have any articles yet? Or that SDG 16: Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals only have one each? Why not submit an article that links to these SDGs, so that these issues can be brought to the fore!
Our new Referencing Guide [1]
References are super important, but we know they take ages to write, and you’ve told us that with all the different referencing styles, it can sometimes be a bit confusing too. That’s why we’ve created a new Youth STEM Matters Referencing Guide, making it even easier to submit your article to be peer-reviewed and published in Youth STEM Matters.
