We’re thrilled to announce that in December 2021, we appointed Lewis Cannon to the role of Communications and Administration Officer at Youth STEM 2030.

The role will see Lewis play a key role in enabling Youth STEM 2030 to expand our reach through creating content for our social media channels, sharing our latest news about new partnerships, programmes and milestones, as well as working to give young people the best experience as part of our programmes.  Ultimately, this new role will increase the number of young people we reach and the impact we have in our mission to empower youth globally to make a difference through STEM.

Lewis brings a real passion for our mission to the role, and though he wouldn’t describe himself as being the person who’s going to put on a lab coat to solve global challenges, his strengths lie in communication, meaning “in this role I can communicate STEM in a way that will inspire and empower others to use STEM to make a difference”.  Having finished school last year with SQA Highers including English, Modern Studies and Business Management, he’s bringing a whole range of skills to the team.

New Communications and Administration Officer, Lewis, said:

It feels incredible to be given the opportunity to work with such passionate people here at Youth STEM 2030 and I really look forward to working with the team who clearly put in a lot of effort and thought into their work, encouraging young people to use STEM to make positive change in the world.
— Lewis Cannon, Communications & Administration Officer, Youth STEM 2030

The role was created in partnership with the UK Government’s Kickstart Scheme, and our application was supported by the Kickstart Gateway Organisation Inverclyde Chamber of Commerce.  Designed to help young people into work while driving post-pandemic recovery, the £2 billion Kickstart Scheme provides funding to employers to create new 6-month job placements for 16 to 24 year olds who are currently on Universal Credit and at risk of long-term unemployment.

The Kickstart Scheme creates National Living Wage jobs for young people, with Youth STEM 2030 opting to boost this to ensure all of our employees are paid the Real Living Wage - the independently calculated wage needed to meet the rising cost of living.

Speaking of Lewis’ appointment, Youth STEM 2030 Founder & CEO, Mhairi McCann said:

We’re delighted to be welcoming Lewis to the team, and to be creating employment opportunities for young people as part of the Kickstart Scheme.  We’ll now be able to take our next big steps as an organisation to increase our reach, and deepen our impact through creating new programmes and opportunities for young people.
— Mhairi McCann, Founder & CEO, Youth STEM 2030

Mhairi continued: “We’re really grateful to Andrew Bowman and the team at Inverclyde Chamber of Commerce for their support as our Kickstart Scheme Gateway Organisation, and also to Adrienne Ross our Kickstart Employer Advisor from Department for Work and Pensions for your support along the way to finding and hiring our first Youth STEM 2030 employee!”

We’re proud to be doing our bit to create employment opportunities for young people, and while Lewis is the first employee to be joining our team, we certainly hope that he won’t be the last!
